Why We Need Sustainable Agriculture
Agriculture does not only meet our food needs; it also affects many areas from the environment to the economy, from farmer welfare to social progress. For this reason, it is of great importance that agriculture is sustainable.
The world’s population meets its basic nutritional needs from the soil. In this sense, agriculture, which is the “cultivation of the soil” in its simplest definition, is the most basic food source for the world’s population, which has been increasing over the years.
However, agriculture performs a much larger social function beyond its ability to produce food for us. Agriculture also covers the welfare of farmers and society; the management of various physical and biological environments, such as soil health, water resources and biodiversity; the welfare of this workforce with a large workforce; that is, the entirety of social, economic and ecological systems.
Because it covers such a large system, agriculture also takes the concept of “sustainability” into focus. The equation behind this is very simple. If the sustainability of agricultural production cannot be achieved and at some point agriculture cannot meet the needs of the population, the world will face a great threat of hunger. If production goes further back than the current level, producers will be affected very quickly first, followed immediately by employment, the country’s economy and finally the welfare of society.
Here, in order not to face such a crisis scenario, the sustainability of agriculture needs to be ensured. For this purpose, while emergency measures are being taken, smart agricultural technologies are being developed on the one hand.
